Post-Op Prosperity

“I was on track to reach my goal weight, but then something terrible happened…”

How is it that some patients reach their goal weight and never regain an ounce…

While others struggle with weight regain and plateaus no matter how hard they try?

What do they know that you don’t?

First a Quick Story...

Monica struggled with her weight her entire life. After years of jumping from diet to diet and the programs that promised the World but always fell short, Monica knew it was time to make a big change.

Monica decided she was going to have bariatric surgery.

After all, one of her friends had the surgery a few years ago and her results were astonishing. It was like every time Monica saw her she was at a new all-time low weight.

Even more impressive was her energy levels. Monica’s friend was doing the things she’d always wanted to do, but couldn’t because her weight got in the way.

She was running in 5k races, she went hiking all the time and even going to theme parks to actually ride the rides.

After attending a seminar at a nearby surgical center, Monica scheduled a consultation with a surgeon, which sealed the deal. Monica was going to have the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

Gastric Bypass

After the surgery, Monica noticed some astounding changes: her appetite was gone…she gladly avoided the “wrong foods” because she’d get sick if she ate them. The weight was just falling off on its own. She didn’t know why it was so easy and frankly, she didn’t care.

The results were clear when she stepped on the scale, but soon other people were noticing. They’d compliment her on how much she’d changed over the last several months and how happy she was. She felt so proud, so accomplished!

Things were going so well that Monica felt like she was finally able to get back to her life and start living…

…and that’s exactly what she did — until something terrible happened…

Monica woke up one morning and started getting ready for the day, just like she always did.

However, today, as she was putting her on her clothes, her attention was drawn to a tightness in her shirt she hadn’t noticed in a long time.

She stepped on the scale and felt a rush of anxiety as she read the results. She stepped back off, let it reset, and stepped back on. Her worst nightmare had actually come true…

She had regained 31 lbs.

After a brief moment of panic, she composed herself and pledged to get back on track and get back to what worked before. She started watching what she was eating, cutting out carbs, only eating when she felt extremely hungry.

But this time something was different…

Her appetite wasn’t suppressed like after the surgery. The dumping syndrome was gone. She had to face the reality that this was going to be harder than before.

After a week of clean eating and avoiding her trigger foods, Monica reluctantly stepped back on the scale.

Pure devastation – nothing had changed. She weighed exactly the same weight she had a week prior despite all the work she’d put in.

She felt embarrassed and afraid of what people would think now that she had regained the weight. She wanted desperately to get back on track, but she just couldn’t…

Monica was willing to do anything to feel that sense of pride again. To feel healthier than ever, she just didn’t know what would actually work and how to do it…she felt lost. She felt helpless.

For bariatric surgery to be considered the #1 treatment for obesity, this can’t be happening to every patient, can it?

Why is it that some patients have the hardest time making the surgery work for them, while others breeze through post-op life with no issues?

It’s like they were 100% transformed inside and out the moment they left the hospital.

They don’t have hunger issues, they don’t struggle with emotional eating or head hunger. They know what to eat. They know how much to eat. They know exactly what exercises to do. It just works for them…

WHAT IF IT WERE DIFFERENT?

What if Monica was one of these patients that “gets it?” The version of herself after bariatric surgery she always imagined…doing the things that inspired her to take that leap in the first place.

Now imagine this…

The sun rises on a Tuesday morning and Monica wakes up with a smile on her face. She walks into the bathroom and steps onto the scale.

It’s been about eight months since she reached her goal weight so, at this point, she’s not expecting any weight loss. She’s just monitoring her weight as she settles into “maintenance mode.”

The results reveal themselves — no change from last week. It’s official, she’s mastered the maintenance diet.

There’s no guesswork with her diet anymore, she can just enjoy — it’s true freedom.

Now when Monica is at work she finds herself excited, anxious even, about weekend activities. No longer does she feel trapped, the heavy layer of guilt has dissipated and she relishes the feeling of hard work paying off.

When she gets home from work and settles into the evening, she takes a moment to reflect on everything she’s accomplished — where she started and where she is now —  and falls asleep under a blanket of calmness, the sensation that everything is going exactly how it should.

How can the same surgery give such drastically different results?

This isn’t fantasy, by the way. If you spend only 5 minutes on bariatric message boards you’ll see scores of patients posting their success stories and others proudly announcing that they’ve reached milestones like “ONE-derland” (they’ve made it under 200lbs.), see for yourself:

“Well, I am officially below 200 lbs. I simply cannot believe it. It almost doesn't feel real to me. I never thought in a million years I would accomplish any weight loss goals let alone get below 200 lbs.”

"Well, folks, I had my RNY in July 2014. I started at 302 pounds. I finally, finally, FINALLY, F I N A L L Y!!!, hit onederland this morning!!! I stalled out 2 years ago at around 205, and never lost another ounce. Bounced between 205 and 215, and just got fed up. This morning was 199.8!!!!! I cannot believe it!! I never thought I’d see the scale dip below 200."

“Weighed in 278.4 day of surgery, 178.4 this morning. Sleeved 8/1 so just a bit over 10 months out. Also, I'm officially out of the "overweight" BMI range.”

Immediately after surgery bariatric patients are bursting with motivation and excitement. They’re powered by the adrenaline of acting on such a huge decision. They’ve been given another chance to be who they always wanted to be.

The internal self-talk goes something like this:

“After a year or two, I will be settled into my goal weight and truly living my life.” But then life continues to zoom by…

All of a sudden, one day  “a year or two after surgery” arrives and reaching goal weight becomes something that’s merely imagined “someday.”

All patients start at the same place:

THE BEGINNING

At this point every patient runs through the same progression, whether it’s weight regained, stalled weight loss or weight never lost. It starts like this:

1. REALIZATION:

“I know I haven’t been doing what I need to do – time to get ‘Back on Track’”

2. FORM THE PLAN:

“I guess I just need to get back to the basics”

3. MINOR SETBACK:

“Wait – what were the basics, again?”

4. OVERCOME THE SETBACK:

“I’ll look online and figure it out, no problem”

5. INFORMATION OVERLOAD:

“Gosh, there are so many options! What’s the right way?”

6. PARALYZATION:

“I seriously don’t know where to start, but I know I need to do something!”

7. THE HAIL MARY:

“I’m just going to work out every day of every week until I get the scale moving, I’m going to cut carbs until I see a difference in the mirror…”

8. BURNOUT:

“It’s not working and I’m killing myself, this is just not worth it…”

9. SELF-DOUBT:

“Am I even capable of doing this? Did I miss my chance?”

10. DEFEAT:

“Nothing I do works, I feel so lost”

An understandable first reaction is to start looking for what went wrong, what was missed. They default to the buzz words they’ve heard their friends say:

Swear off carbohydrates

Go full Keto

Drink the “Whole30” kool-aid

They’re looking for ANYTHING to nudge them in the right direction…

But there’s a lot of bad information out there. The type of advice and guidance that can actually do more harm than good.

Bariatric patients never regain weight due to a lack of trying or not “wanting it enough.” There are invisible forces at work that exist for one main reason: to derail you from your journey.

Once you’re able to see past these misconceptions your journey becomes easier in an instant.

6 Myths About Losing Weight After Bariatric Surgery

It’s ridiculous, but there are people who actually think this. Both bariatric patients and non-patients alike. Consider this:

“Bariatric surgery is unlike any other surgery. For most surgeries, it’s the surgeon who determines whether or not the surgery is a success…”

In other words, as long as the surgeon does a good job with the repair or their “craftsmanship,” the surgery will be a success and the outcome a positive one.

“…But with bariatric surgery, it’s up to the patient to take ownership and use the surgery as a tool to reach the desired outcome.”

Bariatric surgery makes amazingly powerful changes to the human body.

However, learning how to use the surgery as a tool is like learning how to eat properly and how to exercise effectively to improve functional movement and sustain weight loss is ultimately the responsibility of the patient, not the surgeon.

And it’s HARD!

Nothing is harder than behavioral change. The psychological challenges alone are stacked against you…

“I’ve been following keto for months now but I haven’t lost any weight, HELP!!”

Fad diets promise dramatic, unrealistic weight loss results. They are designed to take advantage of people’s willingness to “try anything” to achieve their weight loss goals.

Patients often mistakenly think that they need to follow fancy diet protocols and complicated eating schedules in order to lose weight. The more difficult the diet is the more effective it will be, right? Wrong.

But it’s easy to see why these fad diets gain popularity.

Every week there’s a new headline or magic diet protocol that exploits our desire for simple weight loss by following their magic formula or adding their “secret ingredient” to our diet.

Unfortunately, these marketing-fueled monsters ignore the tactics that really deliver sustainable weight loss.

Diet protocols like:

  • Paleo
  • Ketogenic Diet
  • Carb Cycling
  • Master Cleanse

The list could be 100 pages long…

These diets are based on 1 of 2 irrational concepts:

  1. They promise rapid weight loss in exchange for a minor behavioral or dietary change:
  2. They promise rapid weight loss by prescribing unsustainable eating styles and schedules

These fad diets get us to focus on their protocols as the solution instead of scientifically proven principles that result in lasting weight loss.

Keeping up with a food log can be tedious and time-consuming. Many patients resort to what we call the “Eyeball Method.”

This is simply when you guesstimate the portion of something you’re eating instead of actually measuring.

The “Eyeball Method” is dangerous because our eyes are HORRIBLE at estimating food portions which can easily lead to accidentally consuming hidden calories.

The fact is, it’s quite easy to underestimate how many calories we consume throughout the day.

A recent survey of 4,452 adults asked women and men to log their caloric intake. On average men said they believed they consumed ~2,065 calories per day, but actually consumed 3,119 calories.

Women said they estimated they consumed 1,570 on average, but the real figure was 2,393.

This represents an underestimation of:

33.7% for men & 34.3% for women.

This alone would be enough to stall weight loss (and even cause weight GAIN), and just as well the confusion about why the scale won’t budge.

“I just didn’t have the motivation to work out like I should…”

We give motivation far too much responsibility. We rely on motivation to get us through the tough tasks of the day and to help us make the changes we want to see in ourselves.

How many times have we decided not to go to the gym because “we just were not motivated enough?”

This is the most self-destructive 6-word sentence we can say to ourselves. By muttering this phrase we are giving ourselves permission to give up.

  • I was going to start a new diet…but I didn’t have time to prepare my meals.
  • I couldn’t wait to find a new exercise program…but I didn’t know where to start.
  • I was going to clean out the garage…but I got too busy.

Then when we think back on these unaccomplished goals we try to figure out what happened…

“I just didn’t have the motivation…” we hear a voice say in our heads. By accepting that motivation was never the problem, you’ll stop lending yourself the excuse.

Desired results stem from having a proven plan and then following the plan with absolute confidence. Not from motivation…

Oh if it were that easy…

Would you tell your friend who has an addiction to alcohol to “just drink less.”

Would you tell your sister who is clinically depressed to “just cheer up?”

It doesn’t work that way. The truth is that there are physiological and biochemical reasons why losing weight isn’t such a simple answer. It requires just as much psychological change.

Obesity is complicated. This is a fact.

In order to achieve and sustain the kind of weight loss that you need requires a change in both perspective and behavior in addition to just “diet and exercise.”

We wanted to learn more about this so we dug deeper. We spoke with clinical psychologists that work in bariatric clinics and that’s when we got into the debate about willpower…

It’s common for people to feel guilty about their lack of willpower. It’s like they’re letting themselves down and they feel like, in large part, their lives are not under their control.

In search of the causes of obesity, it’s easy to fall victim to “Magic Bullet Syndrome.”

Magic Bullet Syndrome is when you look for that one, single outside influence that’s causing all the problems.

It’s natural to look for one single cause for a complicated outcome. But obesity is a complicated disorder that has dozens, perhaps even hundreds of influences.

There’s a theoretical approach to psychology called Evolutionary Psychology which was developed to further understand Human Nature. Evolutionary Psychology suggests that losing weight is particularly difficult because our bodies have also evolved with mechanisms that make it difficult for us to lose weight, as a protective measure for surviving periods of famine.

Read that again: Our bodies have evolved to develop protective measures that make losing weight difficult…

Anyone who believes that willpower stands even the slightest chance against Human Nature is terribly mistaken.

Here's the reality

The fact remains that some patients struggle and some patients prosper. The origin of the difference between these two subsets of patients isn’t easily explained. And, unfortunately, there isn’t a single rationale, either.

I’m sure you’ll agree that successful patients:

  • Don’t want it more than you
  • Aren’t smarter than you
  • Don’t have better genetics than you
  • Had the same procedure as you

The difference, the secret to realizing your weight loss goals, lies in the skill of shifting your focus.

The difference between the patients who maintain the weight loss and the ones that struggle is that the former have learned to shift their focus on Big Wins…

Big Wins are the practices and tactics that are responsible for 80% of weight loss results. The successful patients don’t get sucked into the headlines of the latest and greatest diet protocols, fat-burning foods and supplements. They focus on what works, and they reach Post-op Prosperity as a result…

Post-op prosperity means consciously recalibrating how you filter information about weight loss.

Post-op prosperity means sticking to your plan while the other patients spin their wheels, looking for “short-cuts.”

Post-op prosperity means being in control of your weight loss journey.

And once you reach Post-Op Prosperity you will truly be able to start living your life on your terms. The way you always imagined it could be.

Introducing...

Post-Op Prosperity

The most complete, clinician developed guide to reaching your goal weight after bariatric surgery…and staying there for good…

Learn what it takes to become a bariatric success story and end the battle with weight regain and plateaus once and for all.

“Advice” is everywhere, especially BAD advice. For the first time ever we have combined the expertise of bariatric medical professionals to teach the whole person how to thrive after bariatric surgery.

Developed 100% by bariatric medical professionals, Post-Op Prosperity is a three-module online course that unveils the blueprint to sustainable and lasting weight loss.

We’ve learned that success after bariatric surgery is not simply about Nutrition, Exercise or Psychology.

It’s about focus in all 3 disciplines. Like a 3-legged stool, if you remove just one leg the entire thing topples over.

The three pillars to Bariatric Success

Psychology

How to get your mind to do what you need to do. Get this part right and the rest becomes amazingly possible.

Nutrition

Losing weight is impossible without successfully managing the “calories in” part of the equation.

Exercise

Maintaining Lean Body Mass is critical to maintaining functional movement, and exercise adds to the “calories out” part of the equation.

Meet your instructors:

Dr. Cynthia Alexander - Psychology

Dr. Alexander is a clinical psychologist and has worked with thousands of bariatric patients, both before and after surgery as part of the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric program.

She is the author of “The Emotional First Aid Kit, A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery.” The book is recommended by many bariatric programs and insurance companies to help patients find success after surgery.

Ciara House, Ciara Csanadi House, MS, RD, LDN

Ciara is a licensed Registered Dietitian and a State of Tennessee licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist and has been specialized in bariatrics since 2013.

Ciara also has years of experience in the health and wellness field, having worked as a collegiate sports dietitian and one-on-one with athletes of all ages.

Ciara has found her niche counseling bariatric patients on the importance of behavior modification and lifestyle changes to be successful with weight loss and find a healthier, happier life.

Morgan Thomas MS, CSS, CES - Exercise

Morgan has extensive experience with guiding bariatric patients to build strength and functional movement after surgery and has worked in many areas of exercise science and collegiate strength and conditioning.

She is a Certified Speed Specialist (CSS) through the National Association of Speed and Explosion (NASE), as well as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

Her theory is to increase fitness levels in the shortest amount of time so you can reach your goal while enjoying the process.

The unfortunate truth is, while bariatric surgery is an incredible tool to help patients lose weight, it simply cannot do all the work that it takes to reach goal weight and stay there.

You didn’t have bariatric surgery for a quick fix, you made this life decision because it was the first step towards seizing control of your health.

So many weight loss programs focus on “jump-starting” or “resetting.” Post-Op Prosperity  helps you get started, but it heavily emphasizes how to sustainably reach your goal weight so that you can repeat the process over and over and over again.

Post-Op Prosperity is about amplifying the bariatric surgery. It’s a sustainable system that shows you exactly what you need to do to reach your goal weight so you don’t have to figure it out yourself…

More specifically, here’s how it’s going to work:

After working with 1,000's of patients...

...we understand that psychology is one of the biggest factors for sustainable weight loss

Most of us know what we are supposed to do in order to lose weight and stay healthy. So why aren’t we doing those things? There’s a disconnect between what we know and what we actually do. The answer is not how many calories to eat or what exercises to do, but it’s what goes on inside your own head.

Psychology is the missing link...

It’s what causes successful weight loss or weight regain. Without it, no amount of information or learning can move the needle. Psychology is the invisible facet to post-op life that’s in charge of things like:

  • Struggling with emotional eating
  • Falling back into old habits
  • Dealing with the frustration of weight loss plateaus
  • How to stay focused on lifestyle change

That’s why we place such a heavy emphasis on Psychology.

“Finally something that focuses on the PSYCHOLOGY! I've struggled with emotional eating, and this was a great course on getting back to basics.”

When most programs look like this:

Ours looks like this:

It all starts with Psychology, without it everything else is an uphill battle that’s impossible to win.

It’s like having a whole team to lead you through the process…

This program isn’t just a random set of lessons. We actually pulled in the professionals to create this perfectly balanced system. Our full-stack team is made up of bariatric medical professionals like:

Surgeon

Dr. Stephen Boyce, MD Bariatric Surgeon

Dietitian

Ciara House MS, RD, LDN Registered Dietitian

Psychologist

Dr. Cynthia Alexander, PsyD Psychologist

Exercise Physiologist

Morgan Thomas MS, CSS, CES Exercise Physiologist

The reason for pulling in the entire multi-disciplinary team is because your journey is not dependent on one medical person, you need the entire team.

Every patient starts out with a full team of medical professionals guiding them through the surgery process. Including YOU.

Yes, YOU are an integral part of the team.

But 12+ months after the surgery, when many bariatric patients start to regain weight, they all of a sudden don’t have any support system left, except for themselves.

This is called The Dwindling Team Effect and it looks like this:

The Dwindling Team Effect

Once the entire team isn’t there, this is where bariatric patients typically regain the most weight.

"After the surgery I felt like there was no one left to support me."

This is where Post-Op Prosperity comes in.

It’s like having access to the full team of Bariatric professionals.

“I got all this information on diet class day, but over time I forgot. This was a fantastic refresher course.”

Post-Op Prosperity is NOT for you if:

  • You’re looking for a magic bullet without putting in the challenging work of mental development to tackle your self-talk, determining your goal calories and structuring your diet so that it fits and committing to at least three months of consistent exercise.
  • You have not been cleared by your physician to engage in physical activity and calorie restrictive diet
  • You expect results overnight. Weight loss takes time and persistence and only comes to those who put the work in. Just as bariatric surgery is not the end solution, Post-Op Prosperity cannot make the problems go away without your dedication.
  • You are not willing to be honest with yourself and take an unbiased approach to evaluate your progress. If you can’t be open with yourself how can we be expected to help you?
  • You are simply looking for “motivation” and “inspiration.” The most motivational thing you can do is get results. We are 100% supportive, but our goal is to get you to your goal weight. Period.

Post-Op Prosperity IS RIGHT for you if:

  • You’re ready to invest in yourself and your health
  • You’re willing to be patient, persistent and dedicated throughout this whole process.
  • You’re comfortable spending time to create sustainable weight loss.
  • You’re looking for a systematic approach that covers the Psychology, Nutrition and Exercise aspects of losing weight – not quick fixes or diet tricks.
  • You’re able to understand that weight loss is not linear. There will be ups and downs, but you are prepared to push through any minor setbacks because, we promise, there will be some of those.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t worry about falling behind — each video is distilled down to just the “bite-sized” essentials and includes specific examples so you can spend your time taking action instead of reviewing tons of content

Post-Op Prosperity also comes with lifetime access so you can take a break from the material if you’ll be out of town, on vacation, or just get swamped for a few days. You’ll have this resource for life. It will always be there when you’re ready.

The last thing we need is another thing to juggle. Post-Op Prosperity isn’t another set of to-dos you’ll have to force yourself to find extra time for. It’s not a band-aid or a quick fix.

Post-Op Prosperity is a condensed, at-your-own-pace, transformational program that will show you how to develop deep psychological strength and the peak performance that goes with it.

We recommend spending at least 5 hours a week on this course for maximum benefit. 5 hours is our guideline, but because it comes with lifetime access, you can go faster or slower if you want.

Including the Accountability Coaching, the entire program is 12 weeks long. However, you’ll gain access to the course itself immediately. We recommend watching at least one video per day and with lifetime access you can revisit them whenever you like (and you should).

Upon purchase of Post-Op Prosperity, you will have access to the Private Facebook Group. Once inside you can ask any questions from current members, but one of our BARIVANA Guides will be moderating the whole group to make sure everyone is on track. Any question you ask related to the course can be addressed.

Of course! The Post-Op Prosperity program is built for post-op bariatric patients. Period. We believe everyone can do something to enhance their lives and one of the big areas we wanted to address was physical limitations. We go into great detail how to work around aches, pains and other limitations like osteoarthritis, arthritis and other joint issues.

Post-Op Prosperity is unique in a few different ways. To start, it’s geared entirely to bariatric patients. This isn’t just a weight loss program where we are trying to tap into a new market like “bariatrics.” Our team’s primary business is bariatrics and we know it inside and out.

Secondly, Post-Op Prosperity is developed 100% by bariatric medical professionals. We’ve contracted advisors in the areas of Bariatric Surgery, Psychology, Nutrition, Exercises, we have received consulting from Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and Bariatric Patients.

Thirdly, we stand 100% behind our Money-Back-Guarantee. If you get into this program and after 60 days you decide it’s not for you, no problem. Let’s part as friends.

We like to call this “Special Snowflake Syndrome.” It’s when we believe something about our lives is so unique that we are unable to be helped. Our goal is to help you see that this is untrue and that it’s simply an internal excuse not to join.

The material in the course has been used for decades directly to the patients of the course instructors with bariatric patients from all walks of life. Left-handed, brunette, blonde, tall, dark…

The material works, but if you truly believe it can’t help you please don’t join!

It’s true, you do have other options:

You’ve already seen that Post-Op prosperity is created by a team of bariatric professionals and the lessons are crafted from years of counseling of other bariatric patients just like you. It works.

What would it take for you to learn everything yourself? We will answer fully and honestly.

Alternative Option #1: Hire personal professional help

If you belong to a gym you can easily hire a personal trainer. At an average $60 per session, 3 sessions per week, 4 weeks per month.

Total Personal Trainer Cost for 3 Months = $2,100

You can definitely engage a Nutritionist at $200 per month and mandatory monthly, in-person meetings. They will tell you what to do while you’re working with them, but you’ll always rely on their direction to see the results from their work.

Total Nutritionist Cost for 3 Months (Minimum) = $600

Alternative Option #2: Get “Free” Information From the Internet

We would venture to say that you likely could learn what you need to learn for free on the internet. It wouldn’t come easily, though. It would take months, if not years of scouring website after website.

Not to mention the trial and error that would have to run its course because, unfortunately, most of the written word on the internet is fabricated, untrustworthy material.

If you have the time and the willingness to “learn it the hard way” you can absolutely use the internet, but it will come at a cost: Your Time

Alternative Option #3: Do Nothing

Perhaps the most terrifying choice of all. You are here because at some point in your life you had bariatric surgery. Something tells us that you’re not the type to “Do Nothing.” You are someone who takes action and is eager to do whatever it takes to reach your goals. How much longer can you wait? When do you need to reach your goals?
